Men'due south Journal is an American monthly men'southward lifestyle magazine focused on outdoor recreation and comprising editorials on the outdoors, environmental problems, wellness and fitness, manner and fashion, and gear. It was founded in 1992[2] [3] past Jann Wenner of Wenner Media, who sought to create a publication for "active, accomplished men to fuel an adventurous and discerning lifestyle".[iv] Wenner Media sold Men's Periodical to American Media, Inc. in 2017.[five]

Each issue of Men's Journal is divided into three subsections:

  • Notebook – encompasses the latest trends, products, destinations, mode & design
  • Blueprint – provides the latest scientific discipline articles and expert advice on diet, fitness, and exercise
  • Gear Lab – a monthly heir-apparent'south guide of tested and canonical essentials: tech, tools and toys. Men'south Journal hires experts and professionals to examine the products; the best performing gear throughout the year get highlighted in the Dec issue, "Gear of the Twelvemonth".

On Apr vi, 1992, the New York Times appear the debut of Men'southward Journal: "The first issue of Men's Journal, a magazine for men interested in adventure, fitness and participatory sports, volition appear on newsstands on April 13. …The 180-folio upshot of Men's Journal carries 83 pages of ads. In 2015, Jason Fine, the editor of Men's Journal, was tapped to run Rolling Stone, after its current editor, Will Dana, left, after the magazine was forced to retract a story well-nigh an alleged a gang rape at the University of Virginia.[x] Afterwards the article was published, local police force could find no prove of the law-breaking.

In 2017, Wenner Media sold Men's Journal to AMI, publisher of the National Enquirer, among other supermarket tabloids. On July 21, 2017, Greg Emmanuel was named main content officer of Men'southward Journal, [11] succeeding Marking Healey. In August 2017, Men'south Journal began incorporating Men'due south Fettle into its impress edition, increasing both its page count and issue count to 12 issues annually.[12]

In December 2019, Men's Journal announced its best stories of the past decade.[thirteen] They included "The Fighter" by Stayton Bonner,[14] "Flight Risk" by Devon O'Neil[15] and "Dirty Work" by J.R. Sullivan.[16]

On February 21, 2020, American Media appear the layoff of Men's Journal's entire New York editorial staff, totaling about 20 people. In doing so, the company also reduced the mag'southward frequency, from ten problems a year to six, and trimmed apportionment to ane million, downward from near 1.25 one thousand thousand. WWD reported:[17] "...David Pecker's American Media is merging Men'due south Journal'south editorial operations with Carlsbad, Calif.-based The Adventures Sport Network, which it acquired final yr. At the time of the layoffs, Men's Periodical, after years of losing money under Wenner Media, was assisting.[18]

The New York Post reported: "The layoffs include Greg Emmanuel, the chief content officeholder and almost senior editor, who had moved with the title from Wenner Media and got elevated to the top job when American Media laid off the previous editor-in-chief, Marking Healy, in 2017."[18]

On Twitter, the news was taken as the decease of the magazine. "RIP @mensjournal," the writer Stephen Rodrick wrote.[19] The investigative reporter Bryn Stole wrote: "here is full of the kinds of aggressive and entertaining pieces that made Men's Journal a damn fine magazine. It was amidst a minor—& dwindling—number of places that'd really pay writers to hunt these sorts of stories."[20]

The mag remains under AMI's control but it'due south unclear who is currently editing the magazine.
